Plate #28: A Village Seamstress

Ichmul, Yucatan, 1998

In Ichmul, after photographing in the hot sun for over two hours, we walked into a small Mayan grass hut where they were selling horchata drinks. I looked into the back room and saw this scene unfolding—an older Maya seamstress teaching her granddaughter how to use a sewing machine. This has become one of my favorite images from my trips to the Yucatan.
