Drawn back to southern Mexico more than 20 times over nearly a decade, Robert Hansen created a deeply personal record of its people and historic places. Ancient Maya temples, village churches, doorways, and passages share the narrative with intimate portraits of field workers, street vendors, children, and elders.

Influenced by the poetry of Octavio Paz and the early photography of Armando Salas Portugal, Hansen’s travels became an inward journey as well. “My numerous trips evolved into spiritual journeys which helped to illuminate and clarify my artistic pathway.”

Through the patient craft of platinum-palladium, gelatin silver, and hand-varnished printing, these encounters find lasting expression in prints that invite a closer, quieter look.
