Horses and Church Ruin, Campeche

Campeche, Yucatan, 1997

In the early morning we left Uxmal and drove through a rising fog into the rain forest of Campeche. Once we got past Sayil, we knew we were in the very heart of the Yucatán. This was real Maya back country—hot and humid, but enchanting. Roofless stone churches with horses tied up in front appeared around every turn. Large trees literally grew out of the walls of the churches. The rain forest was reclaiming what humans had built. Photo © copyright by Robert Hansen.
