The Maya city of Uxmal is situated in the rain forest, at the edge of the Puuc mountains in the Yucatan. Uxmal was once home to twenty-five thousand inhabitants before it was abandoned, and today it is considered to be the jewel in the crown of the archeological region. At night, the road next to our motel disappears into the dark rain forest. I love walking down that road at night with nothing but bright stars and noises for company. Still, I must remember that this is real wilderness. Knowing that I must be careful, I don’t venture out too far. Yucatan Passages contains Robert Hansen’s full diary entry plus valuable maps and directional information for those wishing to visit this fascinating place.
