Plate #50: Street Scene #2, Yucatan

Oaxaca, Mexico, 1997

I set up my 8×10 camera photographing this archway in the city of Oaxaca in southern Mexico. I immediately saw the photographic possibilities as the local populace walked through the Oval composition. The only problem was that every five minutes or so I would have to move my camera to let the traffic behind me go by. But suddenly, after having resumed my spot and having made numerous exposures, I noticed that I had been undisturbed for a long period of time. I looked behind me and to my surprise there was a long line of traffic and at the front of the line a little Indian taxi driver holding back the cars and letting the gringo photographer get his shot.
