Image: Loltun Cave

At Loltun cave, south of Oxkutzcab, is a large cavern showing evidence of human occupation for as long as 10,000 years. When we were there, the temperature outside hovered around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. However, when we descended into the cave and reached a dried up well at roughly 80 feet below the surface, the temperature had dropped by at least 25 degrees. An ancient Mayan inscription at the cave entrance dated back 4,500 years.
