In this isolated region of the Yucatan, Spanish as well as English is a foreign language. The villagers of Ichmul spoke a bizarre variation of the ancient Mayan dialect. Our communication with the curious villagers was of the heart and not the head and soon long periods of awkward silence gave way to excited exchanges about the history of the Mayan temples located around the township.

The villagers showed us many things that day including an ancient pyramid with a secret passageway revealing rooms with 1200-year-old wall paintings. I will always remember the people of Ichmul as innocent, open and honest. Their child-like qualities transcended our language barrier and revealed a common thread of humanity shared by us all.
