Image: Edzna Ruin

Located in the interior of the jungles of Campeche, close to the massive Calakmul Biosphere, is the ancient Mayan city of Edzna. Edzna is famous for its elaborate irrigation system developed by the Maya 1500 years ago. The famous Puuc architectural style repeated at Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Labna and Sayil, was first developed at Edzna resulting in some of the most beautiful buildings in all of Mexico. Edzna is the middle ground between the new Mayan world of the northern Yucatan and the ancient Mayan world of Guatemala. Close to the massive Calakmul Biosphere which is home to hundreds of jaguars, the un-restored section of the park has the feel of true wilderness.
