Mani is a mission built in 1549 by the Franciscan priest Father Luis de Villalpando. He enlisted the help of over 2,000 Mayan converts. The moment we walked into the mission we were taken back to the Yucatan of the 1500’s where thousand-year-old Mayan cultural traditions were forcefully integrated into Spanish Catholicism. At Mani, one feels the austere simplicity of a 16th century Franciscan life. I observed the low angle winter light caressing each aged stone, illuminating stairs and glancing off ancient statues and hieroglyphic blocks. Each stone and statue, each solitary space, had a life of its own, a glow from within.
